Ocular’s Crystal Touch projected capacitive (PCAP) touch panels are available in custom designs that are specifically tailored for outdoor and marine applications. Crystal Touch provides a robust touch solution with increased optical clarity, durability and scratch resistance. These specially designed touch panels are also non-birefringent and immune to false touches caused by water spray and droplets.

The sun can cause birefringence, i.e. a “rainbow effect,” on a touch screen. Users wearing polarized sunglasses are impacted the most by birefringence, which significantly disrupts display clarity and viewability. Ocular touch panels designed for outdoor use are constructed to eliminate birefringence without the use of special coatings, which reduce sensor durability. Applications such as outdoor POS machines and infotainment systems will benefit from customized touch panels for outdoor use. The elimination of glare, scratch resistance and allowing the user to interact with the device while wearing their polarized sunglasses, will save the user time and provide an optically clear touch panel without a rainbow interfering with the image.

Marine applications will also benefit from the new outdoor touch panel offerings. Water droplets, especially salt water, can cause false touches on projected capacitive touch panels. False or unintended touches can be problematic, or even dangerous, in certain applications. Leveraging touch panel design expertise and a strong technical relationship with Atmel®, Ocular has a proven design capability that enables touch panels to identify and disregard unintended touches caused by water droplets and spray while still maintaining accurate touch functionality.
