Designing and manufacturing Point of Sale (POS) terminals is especially challenging due to the environment in which they are required to operate. POS terminals are deployed in locations with variable environmental conditions and subject to continual and harsh usage. Typical customer requirements include extended image retention, continuous power on, low glare and high accuracy stylus performance for signature capture.
Point of Sale is a rather broad category of products. Ranging from signature capture devices to outdoor ATMs, POS terminals must increase durability and readability in order to expand the lifespan of the device as well as be able to function properly in multiple environments. Crystal Touch panels can enhance a broad range of POS products due to their design flexibility and variety of size options. Standard Crystal Touch panels are available from 3.5″ to 18.5″ and custom sizes are also available. Design flexibility is provided with the controller assembly, many standard Crystal Touch panels are now available with Chip on Flex (COF) designs to save space by eliminating an additional PCB board to house the controller chips. Many Point of Sale terminals have smaller enclosures and will benefit from a reduced touch panel thickness. The Crystal Touch EDGE products are ideal for smaller enclosures that require a reduced thickness to save space but also provides a robust and scratch resistant surface.
Projected capacitive touch panels are an all-glass solution which provides a scratch free surface. Applications such as POS machines are constantly being interacted with; previous technology used a film that would scratch and make the display hard to read. Glass construction prevents this from occurring and extends the lifespan of the POS terminal. Other benefits of projected capacitive touch technology include increased optical clarity and the ability to withstand chemicals and harsh cleaners. Since POS terminals are interacted with on a daily basis, they need to be cleaned frequently as well.
